How ‘green’ are photovoltaic panels?

Solar Energy is the most abundant energy resource on earth.  It is a clean and sustainable energy source that creates no harmful greenhouse gas emissions, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

Harnessing the sun’s power using photovoltaic solar panels is currently the best way to take advantage of green energy source.  Photovoltaic panels do have an environmental impact in the manufacturing, transport, installation and recycling process but based on the alternative to normal electricity sources, this impact is significantly diminished.   Keep reading to find out more…

  • Yes. The Panels that we use at B.E Electric, DualSun Flash 500, are 95% recyclable

Solar panels contain materials such as glass, aluminium, and various types of semiconductor materials like silicon. When properly processed, these materials can be extracted and reused in new solar panels or other applications, reducing the need for raw materials and minimizing the environmental impact.

With Dualsun the cost of recycling the panel is included in the selling price as part of an ecological taxation (the same as household appliances). There is no profit margin on the eco-tax and it is based on the current costs associated with recycling a PV panel.

Since 2014 the collection and recycling of PV panels is regulated in each EU member state who is required to implement national legislation based on this directive. In France alone there are nearly 50 voluntary collection points. The material is picked up from these collection points and transported to 10 partner recycling plants located in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Belgium

  • No rare earth elements are used in manufacturing solar panels. They are mostly made from crystalline silicon, an element extracted from sand or quartz and, just like glass, this is 100% recyclable. A DualSun panel emit less CO2 than standard solar panels throughout their lifespan. The carbon footprint is less than 550kg CO2 equivalent per kWp.

It is true that the silicon sourcing represents the highest carbon impact of the panel. DualSun use low carbon silicon with 33% recycled content to limit the extraction of raw materials.

A functioning solar panel typically requires only 1.5 to 2.5 years to "pay back" the energy used in manufacturing. As solar panels have a 25-30-year service lifespan, the carbon footprint of installations are one of the best compared with other energy production systems.

Once installed solar panels have a minimal environmental impact. Unlike conventional power plants, they do not require water for cooling and do not produce any air or water pollution. They can also be installed on existing structures, minimising the impact on the surrounding environment and ecosystems.

  • Over their lifespan PV panels produce more energy than is used to manufacture them. Depending on their installation location, the ‘break even’ point is 1.5 (southern Europe) to 2.5 Years (Northern Europe). This is caolcuated based on the total energy required in manufacturing compared with the energy it produces annually.

According to the International Energy Agency (https://www.iea.org/energy-system/renewables/solar-pv) in 2020 PV systems installed over the course of 2020 helped to avoid 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. This is the equivalent of taking over 560 million cars off the road for a year.

Overall, photovoltaic panels play a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system, offering clean and renewable energy generation with minimal ecological impact.
